If Playa del Carmen is the heart of the Riviera Maya, then Tulum is its soul. This is a place that is all about good vibes, and in contrast with Playa, has managed to keep that ‘authentic’ feeling of a beach Mexican village. Yes, nowadays, instead of ‘quaint’ and ‘hippie’ has become more ‘boho chic’ style but still, this is a place true to its origins. Tulum is home to some of the best beaches in the Riviera Maya and also to one of the most impressive Mayan ruins there are. Also known simply as ‘Tulum’ this extraordinary archaeological site overlooks the Caribbean Sea offering the best of both worlds in a beautiful postcard. It may sound counter-intuitive but this quaint little village with its boho chic style and exotic Mayan ruins has become the most luxurious corner in the whole Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum is the place when you look for a lavish lifestyle in the Mexican Caribbean and here you have the most exclusive neighborhoods in town:
Tankah & Soliman Bay
Tankah Bay and Soliman Bay are a gorgeous couple of adjacent little bays where peace and tranquility are plentiful and mass tourism is non-existent. They are located pretty close to Tulum, so much that in ancient times Tulum was actually part of the larger Mayan city of Tankah. The area is actually a low key community where privacy and luxury villas are the most coveted assets. There are no big resorts in these bays and just a few boutique hotels scattered along the beach here and there. Some cafés and restaurants can also be found by the beach. Access to the beach goes through the gates of the private community, which makes of Tankah and Soliman bays two of the most exclusive beaches in the whole Riviera Maya. It can be a bit rocky for some tastes, but its waters are crystal clear and very calm making in a favorite of snorkel fans and families with kids. There is also a cenote in the area, making it a true natural paradise.
Aldea Zama Village
The Aldea Zama community is an eco-friendly development located two hours south of Cancun and just one hour south of Playa del Carmen. Its design took into consideration the city’s Urban Development Plan 2006-2030 and Tulum embraced Aldea Zama as an integral part of its development. This is a project well-thought and well-executed from its inception to its smallest details. Nature distribution, distance to the beach, downtown or archaeological sites, building-density, people-density, architectural style, it has all been planned and everything follows a pre-designed procedure. Within the Aldea Zama development, you will find different residential communities such as Aldea Maya, Aldea Premium, La Privada, Selva Zama, Luum and Boca Zama. Inside these communities there are different options to invest, you can get a luxury villa, a 2-bed or 3-bed condo, eco-homes, multi-family lots, commercial lots and mixed-use lots.
Biosphere Sian Ka’an
We left the best for the end. Can you imagine living in a biosphere reserve of 1.3 million acres, stretching over 120 kilometers from north to south and a human population estimated at around only 2,000 inhabitants? Well, that’s what Sian Ka’an, literally translated as “the place where the sky is born”, has to offer. This place has been called “the most exclusive and eco-friendly neighborhood in the world” and now you’ll see why that is not a hyperbole. Established in 1986 as the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, it became part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program in that same year. Just one year later, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This all mean that the area is committed to the most strict environmental standards worldwide. So, you might ask, how a biosphere reserve like this one offer real estate and vacation rentals opportunities?
Tulum Beach Zone
Unlike other good known beach destinations of the Mexican Caribbean, Tulum beach boasts a rich historical side. Being one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayas, Tulum beach hosts the only archaeological site located along the shores of the entire Riviera Maya. Most Tulum visitors remain on the beaches located right in front of the Tulum Ruins but move further south and you will find the pristine beaches. With the soft white sand under your toes, you’ll understand why Tulum beach is a bohemian beach destination. Long stretches of uninterrupted beach allow for long walks, privacy, a feeling of solitude and few other people sharing your little paradise. The sand is finer than other beaches, and the water can seem ‘bluer’ than other cities. Tulum beaches are loved by locals and visitors alike as people are scarce and beauty is abundant on the shores of Tulum. The simple pleasures found on the beaches of Tulum remain timeless!
