The Impact on Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone Construction Boom

For years, the trendiest place in Puerto Vallarta has been the Malecon and its nearby area filled with art galleries and gourmet restaurants. However, in recent years the Malecon has seen its popularity decrease. It has found a strong competitor in the up and coming Zona Romantica, formerly known as Old Town Vallarta. The beautiful Old Town was neglected for years as the tourist boom pushed the boundaries of the once little fishing village to the North, moving with it the heart and soul of Puerto Vallarta centered now in the Malecon.

Ever since an interesting development project was re-inventing in the first quarter of the city and giving it a new personality, that’s how the Old Town Vallarta became the Zona Romantica, a neighborhood recognized for its hip boutiques, its extraordinary gourmet scene, and its alternative nightlife. Whether at the Malecon nightclubs you’ll find most tourists, here you’ll find locals and a growing number of Expats. It’s also one of the most gay-friendly neighborhoods in all of Mexico. Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) community, known for its eclectic cafes, hip restaurants, vibrant and active nightlife, charming cobblestone streets, and world-famous Los Muertos beach, has become one of the most coveted neighborhoods for foreign and domestic visitors and it plays a big role when it comes to real estate investments. Over a dozen new buildings in this region have broken in the last few years, some of which are sold out and occupied. With Studio apartments starting in the mid USD 100,000 to USD 1+ Million for luxury homes. But what impact will all these developments have on the infrastructure?

Zona Romantica Puerto Vallarta

Construction Boom

This year, the Zona Romantica has bet on its growing popularity and it underwent a profound renovation that has multiplied its already wide array of top-notch establishments and its diversity of things to do. Among the most glaring additions is that of the renowned Blue Chairs Resort, the heart of the gay scene, which features now 38 new one-bedroom suites and two new roof terraces. Just like Andales on the Bay, one of the favorite accommodations in the area, which is offering new studios and one-bedroom units as well. The Zona Romantica is also adding a new and exciting boutique hotel La Piñata, offering six cozy and luxurious rooms in the corner of Puerto Vallarta that perfectly blends the Mexican way of life with modern American elements.

The Zona Romantica’s largest hotel has scheduled its grand opening; the Almar Resort will be a 5-star condominium resort with a high-end beach club already in place, the Mantamar Beach Club. The Sapphire Beach Club will become just the latest in a series of beach clubs recently inaugurated in Puerto Vallarta. Sapphire will offer the finest amenities in town, with lavish beach cabanas and internationally experienced chefs. This club also offers the fascinating new attraction of the Flyboard.

Puerto Vallarta has built on a reputation as a great gastronomic destination, with an impressive array of gourmet restaurants, and the Zona Romantica has its good share of them. Adding to that already outstanding cuisine, the Zona Romantica is opening a couple of first-class restaurants such as Pulpito 116, offering an exquisite menu of tapas, pizzas, salads, sangria, and cocktails; and the Maia, of acclaimed Mexican Chef Hugo Ahumada, with interesting new versions of traditional recipes of the world-famous Mexican cuisine. A series of other new places will also open during the high season in the winter, such as La Planetera, La Fiesta, and Plan B, all but guaranteeing that the already trendy Zona Romantica will continue the hippest neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta.
