The best seat at Atenea is on the roof. Someone has strung a hammock between two posts under the palapa, and from there you look over the treetops to a flat strip of Caribbean that changes colour through the afternoon. There is no engine noise. The loudest thing on a Holbox afternoon is usually a golf cart on the sand road below, and then that stops too.
Holbox is the sandy island off the northern tip of the Yucatán, and the first thing to understand is how you arrive. You do not drive onto it. From Cancún airport it is about two hours by road to the pier at Chiquilá, then a twenty-minute ferry across. Guests who would rather not do the pier at all can take a private boat to the property instead, which we can arrange — worth it for a group with children or a lot of luggage.

The island runs at the speed of a golf cart
The second thing to understand is that the roads are sand and the traffic is golf carts. That single fact shapes the whole stay. Distances stop being measured in kilometres and start being measured in minutes of walking: the beach is thirty metres from the gate at Atenea, Punta Coco — the western point where the island watches the sun go down — is ten minutes on foot, and Holbox village is fifteen minutes walking or five in a cart.
It means you will not be renting a car, you will not be parking, and after the first day nobody in the group asks how to get anywhere. It also means Holbox suits a group that wants the days to be loose. There is no schedule to keep up with here, and no corridor of resorts to walk past.
The water, and the trip to start with
The island sits inside the Yum Balam reserve, and the water around it is the reason most people come. The boat trip we would start with is the Yum Balam Reserve Classic Boat Tour — three hours out through the reserve for the birds, with stops at Isla Pasión and the sandbar at Punta Mosquito. It is rated 4.8 from 525 reviews on GetYourGuide, run by VIP Holbox Experience, and it is the trip that makes sense on a first visit because it shows you the shape of the place from the water.
Whale sharks are the other reason people come, and that is a season rather than a date: the boats run while the sharks are feeding north of the island and do not sell a date outside it. The rest of what the island does — the night kayak out past the town lights, the sunrise paddle into the mangroves — is on our Holbox page, with what each one actually involves.
Where a group stays
We hold one property on Holbox, and we let it whole.
Atenea Holbox stands at the quiet western end of the island, where Calle Caguama runs out into the palms and the sand at Punta Coco. Six en-suite suites are split across two independent buildings, gathered around a swimming pool and a tropical garden. Sixteen guests, one address.

The two-building layout is the part that matters for a group. A family with grandparents, or two couples travelling with another four, can put distance between the sleeping wings and still eat together — and the dining is built for that: a long-table palapa laid out for dinners under the stars, and the rooftop palapa with the hammocks above it.
The house is run day to day by its hosts, Mia and José, who live on Holbox. They arrange what a group needs: a private chef and menus planned with you, the boat from Chiquilá, golf carts and bicycles, a massage or a traditional temazcal, live music for a celebration. On an island where the village is a fifteen-minute walk away, a chef at the house is usually the right call for a group of sixteen.
When to come
It is a year-round stay, and we do not write any month off. Tell the advisor your dates and what the week is for, and you will get a straight answer about that week.
Is Holbox right for your group?
It is right if you want a few days where nothing is scheduled, where the group eats together, and where the walk to dinner is along sand. It is right for a milestone birthday that does not want a venue, and for families who like that the children can be sent to the beach thirty metres away.
It is less right if you want a town with range — Holbox village is small, and a week of it is a week of it. Groups who want restaurants and nightlife as well as water usually do better on the mainland coast, and the honest thing is to say so before you book rather than after.
What it costs you in time
Allow most of a travel day each way. Cancún to Chiquilá to the ferry to a cart to the house is not difficult, but it is not quick, and it is the reason we suggest at least four nights. Two nights on Holbox is mostly transit.
see the house and the island together on the Holbox page, and an advisor will tell you which dates Atenea still has.

How do you get to Holbox?
From Cancún airport it is about two hours by road to the pier at Chiquilá, then a twenty-minute ferry. A private boat to the property can be arranged instead.

No. The roads are sand and people get around on foot or by golf cart; from Atenea the village is fifteen minutes on foot or five by cart.
Where do you stay on Holbox as a group?
We hold Atenea Holbox, let whole: six en-suite suites in two buildings around a pool, for up to sixteen guests.
How many nights should you stay?
At least four. The journey takes most of a travel day each way, so two nights is mostly transit.
