Frequently asked

Answered plainly

When can you swim with whale sharks from Holbox?

In whale-shark season only. Holbox sits beside the feeding grounds, which is why the trip here is a short run rather than a long crossing, but the operator sells no date outside the season.

Is the bioluminescence always there?

No, and the operator will say so. The night kayak goes out away from the town's lights and the plankton glow depends on the moon and the water; on a bright night you are stargazing instead, which is what the tour is also sold as.

Which suit families?

The Yum Balam boat trip and the sunrise mangrove kayak both work with children, and the island has no cars, which helps. The private horseback ride runs a set route at a trot or a gallop and is not a beginner's lesson.

How far is the island from the mainland?

Our Holbox listing puts Cancún airport at about a two-hour drive to Chiquila, then a twenty-minute ferry. On the island the villa is 30 m from the beach, a fifteen-minute walk from the village or five minutes by golf cart, which is how everyone gets about.

How does booking work?

These book on GetYourGuide rather than with us. We pick them and keep the list checked; the operator holds the booking and the cancellation terms. We earn a commission on the links, and say so at the bottom of the page.
