Villa Niku stands directly on Playa Plataforma, on the Oaxacan coast at Puerto Escondido, between the Pacific and the green hills behind it. Five suites sleep twelve. The beach in front is a local surf break rather than a hotel strip, and the house is built to face it: long horizontal lines, deep shade, and terraces that step down toward the water so that the pool deck, the sunset terrace and the open-air lobby all keep the ocean in view. This is a coast known for its surf and its deep-sea fishing, and the house is positioned for both.
Four of the suites hold two queen beds each with a private bathroom, a terrace and a view of the water. The fourth suite is the exception: a king bed, an ocean view, a private bathroom, a terrace of its own and a plunge pool set into it. Every room opens to the outside, and the fifth suite’s bathroom looks out to sea. The interiors are made from local materials and finished plainly, with the architecture doing the work rather than the decoration, and the terraces are wide enough to be used as rooms in their own right.
An oceanfront infinity pool runs along the front of the house, with two plunge pools elsewhere on the property. Daily housekeeping is included, as is a cook who prepares Oaxacan dishes for up to twelve guests with seafood landed that morning, hand-made desserts and gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free cooking when it is needed, and an in-house bartender who works poolside and on the sunset terrace. An overnight watchman stays on the property, and the bar’s mixologist works to whatever the group asks for rather than a fixed list. On-site massage, yoga, horseback riding and surf lessons are arranged at extra cost, as are private airport transfers.
La Punta Zicatela, with its restaurants and its evening crowd, is twenty minutes by road; Puerto Escondido International Airport is thirty; the quieter beaches at Mazunte and Zipolite are about forty-five minutes south, and Huatulco International Airport roughly an hour. The lawn, the sunset terrace and the open-air lobby together hold events of up to a hundred guests, which makes the house a regular choice for weddings on this coast. For a surf week, a family holiday or a wedding somewhere still unpolished, Villa Niku gives Villa Experience guests a beachfront house with the kitchen and the bar already running.

Booked Villa Niku for the kitchen as much as the view. We’re cooks and the kitchen is serious — gas burners, good knives, counter space. Chef showed us a regional technique we’ve been replicating since. We cooked breakfast together and let chef handle dinners. The market run became our morning ritual.
Puerto Escondido for the surf. Niku for the quiet. No AC needed with the ocean breeze. No pool needed with the Pacific right there. The cook made Oaxacan food — mole, tlayudas, mezcal — and we surfed until our arms gave out every day. The stars at night were absurd. My buddy and I have surfed Bali, Portugal, Costa Rica. He said this was the best combination of waves and food he’s found. The roads are rough. The electricity is unreliable. I wouldn’t change a thing.
No AC. No pool. No concierge. No WiFi worth mentioning. Just a house on the Pacific coast in Puerto Escondido with surf out front and the cook’s food at night. We surfed Zicatela when it was working (overhead+, serious waves), swam at Carrizalillo when it wasn’t. The cook made Oaxacan food — tlayudas, mole negro, tamales in banana leaf. Drank mezcal on the terrace. Read books by lamplight. This is Mexico before Instagram and it’s beautiful. The road in is dust and potholes. Good.
