Puerto Escondido is nothing like the resort towns and Casa Constantia matches that vibe — laid back, authentic, beautiful. Five bedrooms for our surf crew. Walked to Zicatela for the big waves, Carrizalillo for calmer swims. Cooked fresh fish from the market most nights. No frills but everything you need. The hammocks on the patio never had a vacancy.
Back to Constantia for the second year. Puerto Escondido doesn’t change much and that’s the appeal. Five bedrooms, no frills. We surfed Zicatela, ate at the market, cooked simple meals. The hammock patio is still the best spot. The house is sturdy and comfortable. No AC in common areas — never needed either. The fans are strong and the ocean breeze is constant.
No pretension, no marble, just an honest house on the coast with a cook who made incredible food and a pool to collapse into after surfing. Escondido is for people who want the Pacific raw and real. We bought fish from pangas at the beach, the cook grilled it with lime and chili. Drank mezcal on the terrace watching the sunset. The waves were pumping all week. My friend called it ‘Mexico before the resorts found it.’ I hope it stays that way.
