The neighborhood is divided by the coastal highway into Upper and Lower Conchas Chinas: Upper Conchas Chinas offers elevated estates with sweeping panoramic views of Banderas Bay, the city skyline, and the Sierra Madre mountains, while Lower Conchas Chinas puts you steps from the sand with direct access to secluded beach coves and crystal-clear water.
The name means “curly shells” in Spanish, a nod to the distinctive shells found along its rocky shoreline. Playa Conchas Chinas is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most beautiful and quiet beaches — a string of small, hidden coves carved into the rocky coastline, far less crowded than neighboring Playa Los Muertos. Conchas Chinas is located on Puerto Vallarta’s south shore, beginning immediately south of the Amapas neighborhood and the Romantic Zone. It’s approximately 5 minutes by car from downtown Puerto Vallarta and the Malecón boardwalk, and 25–30 minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). The neighborhood is divided by Highway 200 into Upper Conchas Chinas (hillside, panoramic views) and Lower Conchas Chinas (beachfront, direct beach access). Continuing south past Conchas Chinas takes you to Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlán, and the rest of Puerto Vallarta’s South Shore.
Do Conchas Chinas villas have beach access?
Many Lower Conchas Chinas villas have direct or semi-private access to small beach coves along the rocky shoreline. Playa Conchas Chinas is a series of secluded coves with crystal-clear water, rock formations, and soft sand — much quieter than the popular Playa Los Muertos just to the north. Upper Conchas Chinas villas are set higher on the hillside with dramatic bay views rather than direct beach access, though many have private infinity pools and the beach is a short drive or walk down. Most guests use their villa’s private chef for breakfast and lunch, then head to the Romantic Zone for dinner.
