Huatulco · Destination feature

The river at La Bocana comes down out of the hills and meets the Pacific in front of the house. In the morning the water where they meet is two colours and a line, and somebody is usually standing in it with a board waiting for the set. Behind, the hill is green all the way up.
Huatulco is the part of the Oaxacan coast most people have not got to yet, and the short description is this: nine bays, thirty-six beaches, and much of the water inside a national park. That is why the coastline reads as a series of coves with nothing built behind them rather than a continuous strip.

It is the calm Pacific, not the rough one
This matters more than anything else on this coast. Puerto Escondido, further up the coast, is a surf town with a competition wave. Huatulco is the Pacific at its clearest and calmest — bays rather than open beach, water you get into rather than water you watch.
If your group came to be in the water rather than to watch it, that difference decides which of the two coasts you book. We will say so plainly on the phone. Huatulco for swimming; Puerto Escondido for surf and for the town.
The one house
We hold one property here, and it is a particular kind of house.
Villa Escondida sits on the sand at Playa La Bocana. Four suites sleep eight. It is run closer to a small boutique hotel than to a rental: the rooms are finished with handcrafted furniture and cotton sheets, the indoor and outdoor lounges are arranged so the ocean is in view from wherever the group settles, and a chef and a bartender work on the property through the day. That is the listing's own wording, and it is the reason this house suits eight people who do not want to think about meals.
The master is called Cuatro and runs to six hundred square feet, with a king bed, an oceanfront terrace and a walk-in closet. The other three suites are sized for the rest of the group rather than as afterthoughts.
Eight is the number to hold in your head. This is a house for one family, two couples with children, or four couples — not for a wedding party. Groups larger than that are better served on another coast, and we would rather tell you now.

Getting there is the easy part
Huatulco has its own airport, and it is a short drive from the house. La Crucecita, the town, is also a short drive, and the bays spread out from there.
What there is to do
More than the quiet suggests.
The day we would start with goes up into the mountains: cacao, coffee and mezcal tastings at an artisan market, swimming under the falls, and a long Oaxacan lunch at a finca. It is 4.6 from 32 reviews on GetYourGuide, it takes most of a day, and it is the trip that explains why the food here tastes different from the rest of the coast — the culture is up the hill, not on the beach.
Closer in there is a guided walk through the national park to Cacaluta bay, the town tour of La Crucecita with its painted church, and a coffee day through three mountain towns at three altitudes. All four are on our Huatulco page.
When to come
It is a year-round stay, and we do not write any month off. Tell the advisor your dates and what the week is for, and you will get a straight answer about that week.
Who it suits
A group of eight who want the clear, calm end of the Mexican Pacific, Oaxacan food, and a house where the cooking is handled. It suits people who have done the Riviera Maya and want somewhere that is not built for visitors. It suits a quiet week.
It suits you less if you want range — a strip of restaurants, nightlife, a choice of houses. We hold one house here. That is the honest shape of what we can offer in Huatulco, and if your group is twelve, this is not your coast this year.
How long
Five to seven nights. The flight is the investment; the coast rewards slowness, and the mountain day alone takes one of them.
see the house, its bays and what sits around it on the Huatulco page, and an advisor will tell you which weeks are open.
