What to book in Riviera Maya & Tulum

Villa ExperienceExperiences · Riviera Maya & TulumNovember 2026

The Mexican Caribbean · Reef, cenotes and ruins

Two bookings carry this coast: the Sian Ka'an Reserve Ancient Maya Canals Tour, where you float the canals the Maya cut through the biosphere, and Chichen Itza with Valladolid and a Cenote if you only make one inland day. After that it is Rio Secreto's underground river, the Casa Tortuga cenotes, and the Tulum ruins with a guide before the crowds.

Frequently asked

Answered plainly

What is the best day trip from Tulum or Playa?

By rating and review count across our catalogue it is Sian Ka'an, either the Ancient Maya Canals Tour or the boat trip out to Punta Allen. Chichen Itza is the bigger name and the longer day: twelve hours with a cenote and Valladolid on the way back. Coba and Ek Balam are the quieter ruins.

Which of these suit families?

The Croco Cun interactive zoo at Puerto Morelos, the Casa Tortuga cenotes, the Akumal turtle swim and the Cirque du Soleil JOYA show all work with children. Xcaret and Xplor are built for families and take a whole day. Sian Ka'an and Chichen Itza are long days in a van or a boat, so judge those by the child.

Where do these tours start?

They spread along the whole coast. Rio Secreto picks up from Playa, Akumal, Puerto Morelos or Tulum; the buggy day and Xplor start at Playa del Carmen; the cenote dives and the private Sac Actun trip start at Tulum; Chichen Itza, Coba and Ek Balam are driven day trips with pickup along the Riviera Maya.

Can you swim the cenotes without being a diver?

Yes. Everything on this page is snorkel-and-swim: the five cenotes at Casa Tortuga, the private pair in the Sac Actun system and the lit underground river at Rio Secreto are all walked and swum, not dived. If you want to dive, the beginners' trip is on our Cancún page.

How does booking work?

These book on GetYourGuide rather than with us. We choose them, write the line under each and keep the list checked; the operator holds the booking and the cancellation terms. We earn a commission on the links, and say so at the bottom of the page.
