Villa Numa Na sits on the sand at Los Naranjos, a small enclave north of Puerto Escondido where the coast is still mostly palms and open beach. The name comes from the Zapotec word for dream. Seven rooms sleep fourteen. The house is arranged so that the living and dining areas stay open to the air on the ocean side, with the pool terrace between them and the beach path, and the bedrooms set back or above for quiet. The finish is understated rather than showy: custom wood furniture, stone bathrooms, deep shade and a constant sea breeze.
The oceanfront master holds a king bed, a private terrace across the water side and a bathroom with twin rainfall showers and a soaking tub, with the beach path just outside. A garden suite and a poolside room each hold a king with an ensuite of its own, and an upper terrace suite adds vaulted ceilings, artisan tilework and a balcony facing the sunset. A family room holds two twin bunks, sleeping four, and a detached casita has a queen bed, its own bathroom, a kitchenette and a private entrance. A seventh room works as a studio for yoga or massage and takes extra bedding when needed. Inside there is a gourmet kitchen, a home theatre, Starlink internet, laundry and air conditioning throughout.
The terrace holds an infinity-edge pool facing the ocean, lounge and dining areas for meals in the open, and hammocks and sun loungers under the palms. Steps lead straight down to a secluded stretch of beach, and the community tennis, padel and pickleball courts are a two-minute walk. A private chef cooks daily with what the local markets have, a villa manager handles logistics on the ground, housekeeping runs quietly through the day, a concierge books excursions, transfers and treatments, and private security is on site around the clock. In-villa massage and wellness sessions are arranged on request.
Local restaurants and cafes are ten to fifteen minutes away, the markets of Puerto Escondido about twenty, and Zicatela, the surf beach that gives the town its reputation, fifteen to twenty. The bioluminescent lagoon at Manialtepec is a thirty-five-minute drive, and Puerto Escondido International Airport is roughly the same. Numa Na is remote even by Escondido standards. Seven bedrooms, wild coastline, no amenities beyond shelter and a kitchen. We surfed untouched breaks, bought lobster from fishermen on the beach, and cooked it ourselves. The isolation is extraordinary — no other buildings visible. No AC, pool, no cell signal half the time. This is adventure travel with a roof. Not for the resort crowd.
You drive until the pavement ends, then keep going on dirt for another twenty minutes. When you arrive there’s nothing but ocean and jungle and the house. We brought groceries and cooked all week. Surfed in the morning, swam in the afternoon, stared at the stars at night. No WiFi to speak of. No other houses visible. My teenagers were furious for the first six hours and then something shifted. By day three they were bodysurfing, catching crabs, playing cards. We left as a closer family than when we arrived.
Numa Na feels like the edge of civilization. Seven bedrooms, Pacific crashing below, zero neighbours. No AC, pool, chef service. We surfed all morning, cooked all afternoon, slept all night.
