About The Villa

Casa Los Guajes lies in Costa Cumana, a short drive south of Puerto Escondido, where the tropical forest of the Oaxacan coast meets a beach that has stayed largely to itself. The villa is not a single house but a group of buildings: five independent bungalow suites arranged around open-plan common areas, linked by paths through tropical planting and past small fountains. Twelve guests sleep across the five suites, and the whole property can be taken together or a single bungalow booked on its own.

The common living and dining areas sit at the centre, open on their long sides so that the sea air moves through them, and they lead to a modern kitchen where the villa’s chef cooks and a service team lays the tables. Around them are the pool terraces and, closer to the water, palapas facing the ocean for shade through the middle of the day. Each bungalow is a private unit with its own terrace, plush bedding and fine linen, and each looks out over the jungle, the pool or the sea; several combine two of the three, and none of them shares a wall with another.

The landscape is the unusual part. Costa Cumana is semi-tropical rather than lush throughout, so palms and bougainvillea grow alongside cactus, and the architecture was built to sit in that rather than to cover it: low buildings, natural materials, wide shutters instead of glass walls, and shade arranged so that the house stays cool without machinery. The beach below is quiet enough that the sound of the surf carries up to the terraces at night. Chef and bar service, airport transfers and daily housekeeping are all included in the rental.

Puerto Escondido itself is a few kilometres north, with the surf at Zicatela, the fishing boats at Puerto Angelito and the restaurants of La Punta, and the quieter beaches of Mazunte and Zipolite lie the other way down the coast. Puerto Escondido International Airport is a short drive, which makes arrivals from Mexico City or Oaxaca straightforward, and the coast road links the whole stretch of beaches in between. For a family holiday, a group travelling together who want their own front doors, or a small wedding on a beach with nothing built on it, Casa Los Guajes gives Villa Experience guests a property that works as one house or as five.

Booked Casa Los Guajes for a reset. Cook handled everything — we focused on surfing, reading, sleeping and the Pacific coast simplicity is what we needed. No agenda, no itinerary. Stars at night and waves all day. That property delivers on that promise.

Los Guajes is a collection of simple structures on the Pacific coast — six bedrooms, No AC, chef. We came for the surf and solitude. Walked to the break every morning, bought fish from the panga boats, cooked over open flame. The night sky here is staggering. Cell service barely exists. Not a luxury rental — it’s a surf camp with good beds.

Back at Casa Los Guajes. The coast hasn’t changed — still empty, still wild. Chef made new dishes from the market. We surfed better waves this time. The isolation feels less foreign on a return visit. Brought warmer clothes — the Pacific evenings are cooler than expected. Chef was *fire*.
