Atenea Holbox

Atenea Holbox stands at the quiet western end of Isla Holbox, where Calle Caguama runs out into the palms and the sand at Punta Coco. Through Villa Experience the compound is let as one exclusive property: six ensuite suites across two independent buildings, gathered around a swimming pool and a tropical garden, with a fully equipped kitchen, an outdoor dining palapa and a thatched rooftop lounge that looks over the treetops to the Caribbean. Sixteen guests, one address, and the beach thirty metres from the gate.

The two buildings let a group spread out and still eat together. The guest tower holds one king suite on each of its three floors — Frida above the pool, Coco Beach and Flamingos facing the sea — each with a private balcony, an ensuite bathroom, a mini refrigerator and a coffee maker. The main house carries the kitchen and living room on its first floor, with a full guest bathroom beside them, the two-king Atenea suite on the ground floor and Luma Garden and Luma Suite above. Every bedroom has its own bathroom, air conditioning and a Smart TV, five have private balconies, and three look out at the water. Seven king beds and one queen sleep sixteen in six rooms, so families and couples travelling together each get a door that closes.

Between the buildings the shared spaces do the work of a small resort. A pool ringed with sun loungers, a gravel garden with lounge palapas that hold the coolest seats on the island, a long-table dining palapa built for chef dinners under the stars, and a rooftop palapa strung with hammocks above the palms. Hosts Mia and José live on Holbox and arrange what the group needs — a private chef and curated menus, the boat from Chiquilá, golf carts and bicycles, massages and a traditional temazcal, live music for a celebration. Housekeeping, one laundry load a day, linens, towels and beach essentials come with the house.

Holbox itself is a forty-kilometre sandbar off the northern tip of the Yucatán, inside the Yum Balam reserve — no cars, no high-rises, flamingos in the lagoon and whale sharks offshore from June to September. Punta Coco, where the island’s best sunset happens, is a ten-minute walk west; the village with its restaurants, murals and street food is fifteen minutes on foot or a few minutes by golf cart, and a bioluminescent beach lies the same distance the other way. Guests reach the island by flying into Cancún, driving two hours to the port at Chiquilá and taking the twenty-minute ferry, or by private boat straight to the property.
