The place

Why Akumal?

Akumal — “place of the turtles” in Mayan — is the Riviera Maya’s sea-turtle bay: a crescent of calm, protected water between Playa del Carmen and Tulum where green turtles graze the seagrass a few strokes from the sand. The pace is unhurried, the snorkeling is famous, and Yal-Kú Lagoon sits at the bay’s north end.

Our Akumal homes are a small, hand-picked set — beachfront and bay-view houses for families and groups who come for the turtles and stay for the quiet. Daily housekeeping and a dedicated concierge come with every home, and our advisors know each house personally.

Guest reviews

In their words.

This is a fantastic home with amazing staff. We celebrated my fiancé’s 30th birthday party here with a large group of 16. Everything was perfectly arranged and we had an absolute blast. Definitely stay here if you can!

This house and its incredible team exceeded our wildest expectations in every conceivable way. We came to celebrate my 40th birthday with a group of six friends, and what we experienced was nothing short of magical.

We could not have been happier with the decision to stay at this place… We would absolutely stay here again and bring more friends along. Even the management was very accommodating and asked us for things we didn’t even think about.

01Where is Akumal on the Riviera Maya?

Akumal sits on the Caribbean coast of the Riviera Maya, roughly halfway between Playa del Carmen (about 25 minutes north) and Tulum (about 15 minutes south) along Highway 307. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is approximately 75–90 minutes away, and your concierge arranges private airport transfers. Puerto Aventuras and its marina are ten minutes up the coast.

02Can you snorkel with sea turtles in Akumal?

Yes — Akumal is the Riviera Maya’s sea-turtle bay. Green turtles graze the seagrass in the calm, protected water just off the beach, and Yal-Kú Lagoon at the bay’s north end offers sheltered snorkeling where fresh water meets the sea. Your concierge arranges guided snorkeling, gear, and early starts before the day crowds arrive, plus nearby cenote swims and reef dives.

03What services are included in an Akumal villa rental?

Every Akumal home booked through Villa Experience includes daily housekeeping and a dedicated concierge; private chefs are included at most villas and arranged at the rest. Your concierge handles grocery provisioning, turtle-bay and Yal-Kú snorkeling, cenote tours, Tulum and Cobá ruins visits, Xel-Há and Xcaret eco-park tickets, and in-villa spa treatments.

04Is Akumal good for families?

Akumal is one of the Riviera Maya’s most family-friendly bays — calm, wave-free water, a walkable beach village, and sea turtles that delight every age. It is quieter than Playa del Carmen or Tulum, with an unhurried pace. Xel-Há eco-park is minutes away, cenotes are close by for afternoon swims, and your concierge arranges kid-friendly excursions and babysitting.
