Organizing a trip for fifteen people across three generations should be stressful. It wasn’t. The cook handled breakfast and dinner, the kids lived in the pool, the grandparents watched from the terrace with their coffee. We did a cenote tour one day and snorkeled the reef another. My mother-in-law, who complains about everything, said this was the best vacation she’s been on. That alone was worth the price. The Caribbean sounds at night put everyone to sleep. Nos encantó.

Second year at the same house. The cook remembered our names — and our food preferences. My mother doesn’t eat pork, my nephew is allergic to shellfish, and without being asked the cook had it handled from meal one. The Caribbean is just as beautiful the second time. Cenotes don’t get less magical. My daughter taught herself to snorkel this trip and the look on her face when she saw her first sea turtle… that’s why we come. Nos encantó, again.

La Vida Dulce — the sweet life. We brought the whole family. Fifteen of us, the youngest four, the oldest my father at seventy-six. The cook served breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Caribbean every morning and dinner under the stars every night. The cochinita pibil on night four had my Mexican sister-in-law asking for the recipe. We snorkeled, visited ruins, swam in cenotes. My father sat on the terrace every morning watching the water and on the last day he said, ‘This is the best week of my life.’ He’s seventy-six and he meant it.
