Casa Cielito Lindo stands in Marina Brisas, on the hillside above the marina at the eastern end of Acapulco Bay. Six bedrooms sleep sixteen, which makes it one of the more accommodating houses of its size on this stretch, and the plan is built around a great room that rises through the house with an iron spiral staircase connecting the bedrooms to it. The decoration is bright rather than neutral, in the Mexican coastal tradition, and the architecture has the arches, tiled floors and deep openings that go with it.
Every bedroom has air conditioning and a private ensuite bathroom, and the rooms are distributed around the central space so that large groups are not stacked along a single corridor. The great room itself is the centre of the house: high, colourful and open toward the terrace, with room for sixteen people to be in one place without it feeling crowded. The kitchen is equipped for both casual cooking and a served dinner, and a personal cook can be arranged to shop and cook through the stay. Sixteen guests in six bedrooms means most rooms take three or four, so the house suits families with children and groups of friends more readily than it does eight couples.
The terrace holds an infinity pool that looks out over the bay, with outdoor tables and lounge chairs placed around it for the afternoon and the evening. Maid service runs daily, security is on the property twenty-four hours a day, and there is parking for three cars. A cook is available at additional cost and will shop and cook to whatever the group wants for the week, which is the simplest way to run a house of this size, and leaves the group free to spend the day on the water.
Marina Brisas sits close to the marina itself, so boats for fishing or for a day on the water leave from a few minutes away, and the restaurants and nightlife of Acapulco are within easy reach in both directions: the Costera to the west, Puerto Marques and its quieter beaches to the east. General Juan N. Alvarez International Airport is roughly twenty-five minutes by road. My parents brought me here as a kid in the 90s. Coming back thirty years later with my own children was something. The bay at night with the city lights below, the warm Pacific air, fresh seafood at the little restaurant near the pier — some things haven’t changed. The cook made pozole one evening that tasted exactly like what I remembered from childhood. We swam in the bay, explored the coast, drank cold beers on the terrace watching the boats.
