Villa Azul Esmeralda

Azul Esmeralda sits on a stretch of Tulum coast where the water actually looks emerald. Six bedrooms, pool, ocean view. The chef covered dinners and some lunches — flexible and skilled. We cenote-hopped, visited ruins, biked to town. The property has a natural, barefoot-luxury feel. Sand in everything by day one — the outdoor showers help.

The ocean here shifts between turquoise and emerald depending on the clouds. Six bedrooms, pool that catches the morning sun. We cooked breakfast and ate out every night. Cenote Dos Ojos is a short drive. The house has good cross-ventilation — we barely used AC. One of the bathroom sinks drains slowly but it’s cosmetic.

Hard to go back to regular life. But overall — Post-wedding trip with 10 friends. We used every part of the space. Made time for watching turtles nest at night and glad we did. One meal that stood out: poc chuc off the grill. Jungle sounds at night — monkeys, frogs, the whole orchestra.

The Caribbean shifts color through the day — emerald in the morning, turquoise by noon, sapphire at dusk. We sat on the terrace and watched it change like the world’s slowest movie. The cook made Caribbean seafood every evening and it was the perfect dinner. We snorkeled, cenote-hopped, visited Tulum ruins at sunrise. The power flickered once during a rain storm but the generator handled it. The rain itself was warm and beautiful — we watched it from under the palapa. This coast does something to you.

The cook made beautiful Caribbean meals every evening — fresh fish, plantains, coconut rice, a habanero salsa that built slowly. We snorkeled every morning and saw different things each time. Visited a cenote where the light comes through an opening in the ceiling like a spotlight. Power flickered during one rain storm but the generator kicked in. The rain itself was warm and beautiful.

The cook’s evening meals anchored each day — sopa de lima, grilled fish, a cochinita pibil on our anniversary night with candles on the terrace. Warm rain one afternoon, spectacular from under the palapa. It cleared for sunset.

The property needs updating. Furniture is worn, the kitchen counters have stains that don’t come out, and some of the tile grout is black with mildew. It’s clean but tired. The beachfront position is the selling point and it delivers on that. Cook service was good. But the interior hasn’t been refreshed in a while and it shows.
