Villa Escondida sits on the sand at Playa La Bocana, the surf beach where the river meets the Pacific on the Huatulco coast of Oaxaca. Four suites sleep eight. The house is run closer to a small boutique hotel than a rental: the rooms are finished with handcrafted furniture, cotton sheets and memory-foam pillows, the indoor and outdoor lounges are arranged so that the ocean is in view from wherever the group settles, and a chef and a bartender work on the property through the day.
The master, Cuatro, covers six hundred square feet with a king bed, an oceanfront terrace and a walk-in closet. Uno is a five-hundred-square-foot suite with a separate sitting room opening to a private terrace over the garden and the sea. Dos is a four-hundred-square-foot junior suite with a king bed facing the water, and Tres, at three hundred square feet, takes either a king bed or two twins and looks out at the ocean and the rock formations along the shore. Meals are served in the formal indoor dining room or at the casual table outside, and the kitchen is equipped for a chef rather than for a holiday cook.
Outside, an infinity pool faces the water with lounge decks around it, and a rooftop terrace with its own bar takes the last of the light. Chef Delfino cooks to the group’s preferences, and drinks are served through the day at the pool or on the terrace. Indoors there is high-speed internet, multilingual satellite television and the handcrafted furnishings that give the house its character. The beach is a few steps beyond the deck, and the sound of the break carries through the house at night.
La Bocana is known among surfers for a river-mouth break that works through much of the year, and the same stretch of coast is good for bird-watching in the lagoons behind it. The bays of Huatulco, the restaurants of La Crucecita and the national park are all within a short drive, and Huatulco International Airport is close enough to make a weekend feasible. Boats run out to the bays that can only be reached by water, and the turtle releases along this coast happen through much of the year. For a family, two couples or a small group who want the beach and a kitchen that runs itself, Villa Escondida gives Villa Experience guests a house with the service of a hotel and none of the crowd.
