Two additional suites offer king beds with private terraces and ensuite bathrooms, all finished with air conditioning, ceiling fans, safety boxes, and WiFi. Morning: swim. Midday: cenote. Afternoon: pool. Evening: the cook’s dinner on the terrace with the Caribbean turning amber behind the palms. That was the rhythm for six days and we never got tired of it. The cook’s grilled fish with lime and habanero was the constant — everything else rotated. We snorkeled, we explored, we read. My husband finished a book for the first time in two years. The Caribbean does something to the part of your brain that can’t stop working. It stopped.

Rented Villa Virginia for a reunion — 5 of us across four bedrooms. The chef prepared two meals daily that made restaurants seem unnecessary. The pool got more use than any excursion we planned. We visited the ruins early morning and explored the coast by car. Slight AC noise in one bedroom — the fan setting helped. Everyone found their corner without anyone feeling excluded.
