All You Need to Know About Medical Tourism in Mexico

Medical Tourism Mexico

Global medical tourism is a $70 billion industry with over 14 million medical tourists traveling annually. Being Mexico one of the world’s top tourism destinations, it’s no wonder that its medical tourism industry has grown three-fold since 2006 and is valued at $4.8 billion, with over one million travelers visiting this beautiful country for health-related reasons every year. For obvious reasons (proximity, affordability), Mexico’s medical tourism target market is American patients (travelers?). So, the main question here is: what Americans need to know when thinking in Mexico as an option to get the healthcare treatment that, for any reason can’t get back home?

Save up to 80% the cost of the same treatment in the US
It depends on the kind of treatment you may need, but usually, it goes from 70% to 80% of savings related to US costs. Dental procedures, for instance, save up to 70%, while cosmetic procedures go up to 75%. For something like a bariatric surgery, you can save up to 80% of the cost of the US. To give you a better idea, a heart valve replacement cost in the US $170,000, while in Mexico you can get it for $30,000.

Get ready to be pampered
Mexico’s healthcare system is formed by a large public sector that includes the Seguro Social which covers most employees in the country and the Seguro Popular that provides coverage to the people who has no formal job (a large percentage of Mexico’s population). As you may imagine, hospitals are overcrowded and the service is slow and inefficient.

However, there is a third leg in the country’s healthcare system and that’s the private sector. Private doctors and hospitals offer top-notch services in state-of-the-art facilities for Mexico’s upper classes and, increasingly, foreigners looking for a quality alternative to their healthcare needs. It’s so easy to find in internet testimonies of foreign patients impressed by the quality of the treatment received the amount of time a doctor took to diagnostic and explain procedures, and even the size of the hospital rooms and the privacy enjoyed in them.

As Mexican private hospitals sniffed an opportunity at the healthcare system situation in the US, they have designed packages that include flights, accommodations, and treatment. Sometimes they even take into consideration the needed time for recovery, and so you might get your chosen surgery during the first or second day of your trip, go to your all-inclusive hotel to recover and get the follow-up procedures before you go back home. This way, you’ll get your treatment and enjoy an amazing vacation in paradise-like destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos or the Riviera Maya. What’s not to like about it?

Quality treatments
The main worry of patients looking to go on medical tourism for the first time is the quality of the treatments received. It’s just normal to be suspicious of a ‘third country healthcare services’, as many people refer to the idea of going to Mexico for a medical treatment. However, that idea and the whole phrase actually is just bogus. Mexico is a modern nation, with great infrastructure and top quality services (for those that can pay for them). Most doctors working in private hospitals have studied either in the US or Europe and constantly participate in international medical congresses and forums. In this global world, science can’t be restrained by borders.

You should keep in mind that this is a $4.8-billion-dollar industry and Mexican private hospitals have gone the extra mile to make sure that the services provided are up to the task, they wouldn’t risk this huge business allowing malpractices or scams. One good piece of advice is to start with something simple, like a dental implant which is quite routine procedures. Get to know how it works and learn with the experience, then if one day you need a more complicated procedure, you will feel more comfortable getting it in Mexico.
