How Millennials will change Luxury Travel!

Millenials Luxury Travel Industry

For years, luxury was well defined. We all understood that the Four Seasons or The Ritz were luxury travel. However, things got murky in recent years with the arrival of Millennials in the spotlight. This is a truly unique generation in the sense that the world that they know is real and completely different from that of their parents. This is the internet generation, the first generation with social media as a defining part of their identities, and have we mention that they are also the driving force behind the steady growth in the travel industry?

So, what are Millennials looking when they travel? And how do they understand luxury?

First, there was this idea that all Millennials wanted were experienced. Hence the surge in experience-centered vacation packages. But that has also proved to be just half of the truth and a very simplistic approach. For sure, Millennials value experiences more than their predecessors baby-boomers and the members of the X generation, but there is much more than that. Multiple surveys and market research papers have found that what they want is to be personally fulfilled, they want personalized experiences and, above everything else, a sense of self-determination. That’s what buying tickets on the internet due to a generation. They don’t need travel agents, they can design their own itinerary, schedule, attractions, etc. This means that the definition of what’s luxury and what isn’t is fluid (as so many things in modern life). It changes depending on whom you ask.

Take Tulum for example. This little village located in the heart or the Riviera Maya carved a niche for itself in the luxury travel segment. It has become a hotspot for celebrities, Millennial ones mostly. But you won’t find a Rosewood or a St. Regis hotel on its exclusive beaches. What you have instead, are a series of small hotel boutiques with a boho chic style. This is a kind of mixture between hippie fashion, organic life, and mindfulness, that find their gurus in celebrities such as Paris Hilton or Gwyneth Paltrow. Now they might say someone such as Kim Kardashian or Selena Gomez, but they are on the same path opened by their older peers.

Millennials Luxury Travel Trends

In a nutshell, the new luxury in travel doesn’t necessarily mean opulence. An exotic cabin by the beach with wooden floors and thatched-palapa roof can be considered a luxury item if it comes with organic dinners and a famous mixologist. In this world, a weekend getaway in Tulum can be considered more luxurious than a trip to a top-notch hotel in Paris. Brands are still important, but the way Millennials understand them have changed. It’s not only about the product, but about how that product is perceived in the new world of social media. Online reviews and travel blogs have more influence and importance now than ever before. Millennials live a big part of their lives online, and that’s where the luxury travel industry is focusing its efforts to attract and understand better what they are talking about when they talk about travel luxury.
